I will be hunting with my M14 this season.
I believe the law is only 1 in the chamber and 5 in the rifle but I don't own any 5 round mags. Will I get in trouble if I use my 20 rounders and only put 5 in it.

Get the 10 rounder and use dowels to stop at 5.. Much easier to get out than a rivet..

Spleify 7-27-12Marlin is the end all be all of everything COAR-15...
as long as you have something in the mag that will limit it to 5 rounds you are okay. shotguns are a total of 3 rounds. They make plastic plugs you put into the mag tube that limits it.
For your M14, i would take the same advice given here. just make sure it limits it to 5 rounds. I was elk hunting last month with a muzzleloader and DOW came around, checked licenses, hunter orange, and gun compliance. Its the first time i have even been checked, but lucky for me i know the laws. he said he gives a lot of tickets for guys who dont have all there gear in compliance. There are a lot more DOW guys out there during rifle season due to the increase in hunters.
Also, make sure when you are driving you don't have a round in the chamber. the mag can be loaded but not one in the mag. Just read your big game guide free from walmart and you will be GTG.![]()
Thanks guys.
I ended up just putting a dowel in my 20 rounder and it limits it to 4 rounds. Better safe than sorry.
As far as checking for blaze orange. Did he measure you? I have a orange hat and orange vest. Will that be enough?
Also do you still have to keep the liver and heart with the animal?
he didn't measure, but he made sure we had it. As long as you have a cheap orange vest and some sort of orange hat, you are good to go. I have one of those super cheap hats and vests from wal-mart and throw the hat on and the vest over the back of my packframe and i am good to go. I think orange is the most ridiculous thing in the world, but i also don't hunt during rifle season.
I don't gut the elk. I never even cut into the cavity at all. I quater everything, take the backstraps, all the quaters with the bone in (saw off the lower part of the legs under the joint for easy carry), get the neck meat, the head with cape attached (i get free wall mounts that way!) and whatever other cuts of meat I can find. When you are 5 miles back in, its comes down to weight, and the few pounds that you can get by gutting the animal isn't all that worth it to me. I give some back to the scavengers and other animals so they can enjoy a meal, but always end up with well over 200 lbs off the elk (at least the last 2 these last 2 years)
I don't like liver anyways, although I am sure my mom would enjoy it. And I don't like to eat the heart. So it would be a waste of weight to haul it back and give it to the dogs or throw it outside the camp which would just attack predators.
I was out yote hunting and was stopped by a dow officer, he only stopped me because he saw that i had a 20 round mag in my AR, Luckily i have always used the rivet method while out hunting. I just sacraficed acouple mags many years ago. Again its better to be safe than sorry. Theres to many ways to loose your hunting privledges these days. Can you imagine anything worse than that!!!
