That's on the low end. A guy I grew up with had one that was handed down through his family for a few hundred years (made in the late 1600's or so), worth somewhere between $250K and $400K, antique yes, but can still slice through a spinal column like new! He had another one made by a famous sword master in Kyoto that cost around $22K. Yikes!
Never hit myself with my wooden bokken. Lots of blisters at first [BooHoo] until I learned correct grip. Swings were not hard just had to practice a lot, correct grip, correct swing arc etc. My worst injury was rolling my ankle on the pant leg of my hackama sparring during a seminar.
My instructor created chanbara gear sold through Century Martial Arts that we practice combative with. Much cheaper than kendo gear and doesn't hurt as much. Great training gear for knife, bo, sticks
available as well.
I'm sure there are ways to really spend money on a katana just like we could with firearms. Works of art that you would be hard pressed to use or shoot. I don't have that kind of money so I will have to stick to getting the best I can buy that is functional and I am not going to be afraid to get them dirty or banged up just like my firearms.
Thanks for the inputs and interest.
