Don't know if you can still get them, but .22 CB caps are good for in the barn or garage short range pest control. They won't cycle a semi auto, and need to be loaded single shot, but work fine in a revolver.

I was going to recommend those but I think he is using a rifle like you said they work great in a revolver but I am not sure if they will make it out of the barrel of a rifle, there is a guy shooting something simular on youtube in his garage and he is using a rifle and if I remember right he thinks it is compressed air, from my understanding I think it is just a primer but we could be talking about something different, maybe some one here has used them in a rifle and will know.
The CB caps are still around and I use them in my Henry lever .22. They work great at short range.

i got these me and my old lady went out to the barn......lots of poops but not one bird to be seen maybe they are forum lurkers and found out what was about to go down
Crafty bastards..
I put roughly a bazillion rounds of these through various rifles over the years, and never had an issue. Same for BB caps, although they lacked accuracy due to the round ball. And they fouled like a mother...[Rant1]

FWIW: Crows pretty much laugh at BB caps...[LOL]
I bought a pack of the shotshells one time loaded 9 in and the last one a mini mag dumped all nine of them ay a sparrow 15 feet away missed on all of them except the mini dropped the little bastard and then repaired the hole in the shop I still call It a win
Yep. .22 cbs will do the job, they wont cycle the action, but you should be able to load a few in the mag and hand cycle it. BTW if you need some help getting those birds out i have plenty of cb rounds and a bolt action .22 that'll take a rabbits eye out at 30 yards. Let me know if you want some company [AR15]
Be careful with .22 birdshot/shotshells used toward anything that "gives" or flexes at close range, such as plastic, fiberglass, etc. The shot pellets WILL come right back at you.
