Phantasm is great. I have it at #14 on my all time list. I dig the whole series for the most part.
@Irving: Blackcoat's Daughter is a really slow burn. I like the slow atmospheric ones though. Not for everyone... Train to Busan is a Korean infected film. Really good though.
My list of my top all-time films is here:

I like "scary" movies that transcend the genre, like Guillermo Del Torro's The Orphanage and the Haunting of Hill House Netflix reboot.
Agreed, both of those are great. I'd say I do too since I love "heady" horror that makes you think, and does something new. I'm not a big fan of gore just for gore's sake.
I agree. I don't understand the attraction for the "Saw" franchise.
I would classify Aliens as Sci-Fi and The Silence of the Lambs as a crime drama.
When it comes to being scared I prefer my movies a little cheesey.
Two of my favorites from back in the day are Motel Hell (1980) and The Funhouse (1981).
The Evil Dead series was always entertaining because of the cheese factor as well.
For the more modern stuff I really like the characters of Rob Zombie?s films but the stories are a bit lacking.
I recently watched Doctor Sleep which is a sequel to The Shinning. It wasn?t a bad film but movies about the supernatural aren?t really scarey in my opinion. The characters were pretty well done I thought.
Event Horizon is definitely horror.
