Anyone brave enough to buy used tires?

Pep Boys tires back in the day for me. Delaminated the thread on a new tire. Stopped buying no name stuff after that.

Man is right though folks. As much as we like to save on tires and buy ammo there are severe risks. Hell even the best summer performance tires are crap in the winter. Or the 60k mike tires may look great even after 5 years but realize you are ridding on hockey pucks that will hydroplane on a puddle or fail to stop in a snow dusting.

Like I said. Buy used but buy a good brand and make sure the rubber is not old. Tires are cheap compared to a hospital deductible.

I recently bought a set of used wheels and tires for my 2002 2wd Tundra. The old man I bought the truck from had the cheapest tires Big O sells installed and they were basically bald. The wheels were steel with plastic hubcaps. I was able to find some really nice takeoff wheels from a Tacoma and a set of Michelins with about 90% tread remaining. The total cost was about $400 after selling my crap tires and steel wheels to some guy for $80. The used Michelins were calendar old, but had been stored inside and covered, so they weren?t dried out. I can?t believe how much better the truck drives.

There is a shop in Brighton just east of the round about intersection of Hwy 85 and Bridge Street who installed the tires on the wheels for $15/ea.

Back in 2013 I wanted to put a set of FJ Cruiser steel wheels on my 4runner. Found a set locally and they already had BFG MTs on them. I don't really like MTs but I'm also cheap so I just put them on with the BFGs. I kept my stock wheels that had Cooper M&S tires on them. Ran the BFGs all Summer long, to include when pulling our teardrop trailer, then in November I swapped the Coopers back on. Did that for 2 years before I finally bought new tires for the FJC wheels. Sold the old BFGs (they still had a good amount of treat on them), the Coopers and the stock alloy wheels to offset the cost of the wheels and tires.

I actually got 5 wheels in that deal so I bought 4 new BFG AT KO's and one used tire for the spare. I sold the 4runner that way in 2015.

So yes, I have run used tires in the past. Lots of people swap out tires when they get a new truck or SUV and the "old" tires barely have any wear on them. A good visual check of the tire to make sure it's got good tread and no dry rot and they'll likely be fine.

However, having said all that, I'm more likely to SELL tires than to buy them used. I'm about to put a new set of tires on my F-150, and when I do I'll make sure to tell the tire shop that I want my old tires back, which I'll sell on FB Marketplace or CL.

But depending on the circumstances (like a car that I intend to sell soon anyway) I could see buying a set of used tires for half the cost of new ones.
