This reminds me of a suspicious fact. A golf ball and a lead ball are really, really close to the same size. 1.68 inches vs. 1.669 inches. There has to be a conspiracy behind this. It can't be coincidental.

Maybe golf ball canons ineffective so they decided to switch lead balls.
Maybe the early golfers were too cheap to pay for two caddies, one for the clubs and a separate one for the ball bag.
