Until we spoke to a local deputy, he confirmed wolves had pushed the elk out.
I've never heard of wolves north of Vail. A friend of mine has a cabin on the North Side of the Eagles Nest Wilderness which is just north of Vail and there definitely aren't any wolves there.

They've been reported in Routt County with photo evidence going back years. But if your buddy hasn't seen any, they certainly must not exist. Afterall, wolves are known to stay put in one area so I'm sure they didn't make the short trip south to Vail.

Yes, they’ve been in the Mt Zirkel Wilderness and north of Steamboat as in North Routt County/Steamboat Lake area. I know some people that claim they are in the Flattops but I also know a few people in the Steamboat area that spend a lot of time in the Flattops and they haven’t seen or heard them there. I wouldn’t use the term “North of Vail” to refer to Routt County and there certainly isn’t a resident population north of Vail.
