    I'll take a stab at this as well.

    A small, four door car might have a distance between vehicles of 8' with this rule.

    A larger, old truck might have a distance between vehicles of 30'+ with this rule. You can fit another vehicle, and then some, or practically two. Other drivers won't get angry, they'll just think your brand new to a vehicle that's more than 6" above the ground.

    Simple height v. viewing angle, etc.

    Does the old pickup need further distance between vehicles when stopped at an intersection?

    Ever had a car die in front of you? Have enough room to turn out. The old pickup will need the turning distance to get into another lane safely.
