Are you looking at new posts, or activity stream? New posts should only show you one list item per thread where there is a new post. Activity stream will show each and every new post anywhere.

New posts - and I'm pretty sure there is only one item per thread, but there's been a tremendous influx of new members lately, and the "hi I'm new here" takes away from the real content of the site, imo.
