Bishop was just fifteen in 1959 when he paid $450 for a two-and-a-half-acre parcel of land at 9,000 feet in the San Isabel National Forest, just outside the tiny town of Rye.

An ironworker by trade, the Pueblo resident labored on weekends, mostly singlehandedly on what was intended to be a small cottage. More than five decades later it stands about 165 feet tall, boasts stained glass windows and is topped by a metal dragon that can breathe smoke from a woodstove inside.

?Without cranes, without money, without a rich daddy. By hand. High school dropout. I work for a living. I paid as I went. No bankers, no loans, no blueprints, no inspections. A place of freedom. A fight for freedom,? Bishop said in a NPR interview in 1994.

It has been described as "authentically dangerous," by more than one visitor.

RIP Jim! We just visited recently, and some parts are definitely sketchy. He engaged in a lifelong fight against state and federal overreach. Kind of a whacko, but in a good way.

Daniel [Bishop's son] hopes to make some small improvements to the structure, but nothing significant.

?You wouldn?t pick up a paint brush and add to a Picasso, so this is kind of my dad?s painting. His life's here and I don?t want to change it too much,? Daniel explained.

Back in the late 80's, his third son died while logging for the castle @ 4.y.o., something to the effect of he got trapped under tree roots. (Nothing negative towards the guy, just for historical note).

A single man can build quite a bit in a lifetime. This one is big enough to have a frenchman up on the ramparts, insulting people's heritage. RIP.

Malcolm Smith, one of the most successful and well-known racers in American moto history, has died at age 83.

However, he was probably best-known in the US for his appearance in On Any Sunday, the film that inspired and also defined an entire generation of Baby Boomer riding.

He was one of my motorcycle heroes, along with Rick Seimen, founder of Dirt Bike magazine, who died last year.

100 years. That's a good run, although it seems the last decade or so was pretty rough.

100 years. That's a good run, although it seems the last decade or so was pretty rough.

Although I didnt agree with his policitcal leanings, I think he was a good man with his heart in the right place from what I know.

RIP, Mr President and prayer for hi family.
