OK, got my validation from the echolink people, so I'm good to go. Can see the various nodes in the main screen, and successfully connected to Kelly's W0TX Denver node in single-user mode (no transceiver). I will be out after 4:30 today, but would like to see if we can get an informal test in the next week to see how many of us we can get connected. For those monitoring this thread, pls indicate if you are interested in getting involved in Echolink, and what your timeframe is. Then we will know how many we can expect and when best to schedule it.

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I very likely am...), but Echolink requires the web right?

Yep internet connection is needed, which is why it is fine for non-emergency use, but when disaster strikes, I would not consider it a good means. It however would be convenient for practice purposes, and have an alternate or backup means via repeater links, etc when the need arises.

I just went through the validation process and am pending. I did not realize there was an iOS app for it. Once I get the approval I will try it out.

Pretty easy to set up for me... I think I have to tweak my router setting for port forwarding... but other than that my list got populated with a bunch of callsigns.

There is a search function at the top, and you can search for a node, callsign, or name. Search by name works with mixed results, just FYI.

I have to find a headset. Since I don't have a Ham Shack this might be nice.

Made my first contact via text chat... I could hear them I didn't have a mic but I got a Lima Charlie from them. very cool, I'll mess with it more later.

I am down for anything after 1700 weekdays and can schedule anything on weekends.

I wish I could post my callsign... maybe I should just get a PO box.

Remember, when using Echolink, you are transmitting on an open Simplex or Repeater wherever you're connecting to.

W0TX-R 4140 node is 449.350 wide area repeater, so you're not just connecting to you and me, it will be heard by everyone and anyone can join in via Radio ~ mobile, handheld etc.

Is the text only part in the open? Is it sent via sub-audible data?

If you guys don't mind posting up times when you will be reaching out, I wouldn't mind tuning in from where ever I'm at to see if I can hear as well. I've basically been listening to and from work the past few days.

When I try to add city frequencies, I don't hear anything. Is this because they are encrypted or I'm just tuning in when it is quiet?
